Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship Training is learning a skilled trade through training on the job and learning the related technical knowledge in a classroom.

The Sussex County Technical School has apprentice programs approved by the New Jersey Department of Labor and the State Department of Education. The school offers related instruction as required by the training agreements in the fields of HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical.

What are the steps to Apprenticeship/Licensing?

1. Find an employer/sponsor
2. Sign a contract of apprenticeship or training agreement with your employer and Training Consultant (Apprenticeship Coordinator) for the Apprenticeship Board
3. Complete on the job training and required working hours (8,000 On-The-Job Hours Required)
4. Complete in-school training at your assigned school (576 Classroom Hours Required)
5. Receive your Certificate of Completion to gain journeyman status
6. Work one year at journeyman status
7. Submit Application to State for Exam Licensure (i.e., Electrician, Plumber, or HVAC Tech)

Apprentices should research early about licensing requirements through the State of New Jersey, Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Consumer Affairs, Professional & Occupational Licensing Boards on-line at www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/nonmed.htm. It will be the apprentice’s responsibility to provide documentation.
